Yosemite National Park: Waterfalls, Secret Hikes, and Giant Sequoias
Yosemite National Park is a bucket-list destination for nature lovers, offering stunning landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls, and towering sequoias. During our visit, we explored some of Yosemite’s most famous sites and ventured into a hidden gem that few visitors ever see. Here’s a look at our unforgettable adventure!
Bridal Veil Falls – A Misty Welcome to Yosemite
Our journey began at Bridal Veil Falls, one of the first major waterfalls you see when entering Yosemite Valley. The short hike to the viewpoint brought us up close to this stunning cascade, where mist filled the air and created a magical atmosphere. Springtime is the best season to see Bridal Veil Falls at full force, but even in other seasons, it remains a must-see sight.
Lower Yosemite Falls – Iconic and Powerful
Next, we made our way to Lower Yosemite Falls, one of the most famous and easily accessible waterfalls in the park. Standing at the base of this thundering waterfall was an awe-inspiring experience. This hike is perfect for all ages, making it a great option for families looking to experience Yosemite’s beauty up close. As you hike to the base of the falls you will be able to see both Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls together. On our way back we were treated to an up close bobcat viewing!
Hetch Hetchy & Wapama Falls – Yosemite’s Hidden Gem
One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the Hetch Hetchy section of Yosemite; an area explored by less than 1% of park visitors! Often overlooked, Hetch Hetchy features a massive reservoir surrounded by towering granite cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. We hiked to Wapama Falls, a powerful cascade that plunges into the reservoir. The trail offered stunning views, fewer crowds, and a peaceful escape from the busier sections of the park. On this hike we got to hike across the dam creating the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir which is the primary water source for the San Francisco Bay area. After the dam we hiked through a mountain tunnel and along the reservoir.
Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias – Walking Among Giants
We couldn’t leave Yosemite without seeing its famous giant sequoias! Since the road to Mariposa Grove was closed for the season, we hiked from the parking area to reach these ancient trees. This hike was roughly 4 miles round trip plus the trails in the grove area. Pack a lunch as there are benches and resting areas at the grove.
Walking among some of the largest living organisms on Earth was a humbling and unforgettable experience. The Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree were among the highlights of our hike.
Earning Junior Ranger Badges
One of the best ways for kids to engage with national parks is through the Junior Ranger Program. Our kids completed their activity booklets, attended a ranger program, and proudly earned their Yosemite Junior Ranger badges. This free program is a fantastic way for families to learn more about the park while making lasting memories.
Why You Should Visit Hetch Hetchy
If you’re planning a trip to Yosemite, consider adding Hetch Hetchy to your itinerary! With its incredible scenery, rich history, and lack of crowds, it’s one of the park’s best-kept secrets. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a peaceful escape, Hetch Hetchy offers an unforgettable experience. If you visit during the Winter or early Spring you may even see MANY more seasonal waterfalls which leads to an even better experience!

Yosemite National Park is a true natural wonder, offering something for every type of traveler.
