Most people who camp have heard of at least some of the membership programs out there. Most of us are members of at least one program while others of us are affiliated with many of the programs. The various programs range in price from a few dollars to thousands depending on what you are getting. Passport America is one of these programs that has HUGE benefit for very little cost!

Passport America is a yearly membership program that gets you access to hundreds of campgrounds across the United States, Canada and Mexico for 50% OFF the published nightly rate! YES I SAID 50% OFF……..HALF PRICE!!!!!!! We started with Passport America quite a while back and the membership paid for itself on our very first trip!!!

WHAT’S THE CATCH?

The program is pretty simple and, unlike some programs, you can look at all the information even before you sign up. There’s nothing hidden here and no additional fees. Each campground signs up with the program and agrees to participate in the 50% off deal. They each get to set their own rules regarding when the accept the rate but most will also allow you to stack the discount with other programs.

Some campgrounds may allow unlimited discounts, some may not allow use on weekends while others may black out holiday periods but in the end you still save TONS of money!! In addition to the savings you’ll often find campgrounds off the beaten path that you didn’t even know existed. This very thing saved our butts in North Dakota after some plans changed due to weather.

In May 2022 we departed Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s North Unit early due to closures and weather issues. This put us on the road toward Minnesota earlier than expected. Tired and not knowing where we were going to stay we turned to Passport America and pulled up the app on my phone. Doing a search along our route I found a roadside campground with FULL HOOKUPS with a published rate of $30 per night meaning $15.00 for us!! SCORE!!!! What made this even better was there were no hassles or phone calls needed. All the instructions were right in the app. We pulled in, found a spot and dropped a check in the box! Easy peasy!!
