Route 66 is arguably the most famous road in the United States and holds a special place in the hearts of many. The Mother Road, as it is often called, has been making a resurgence in recent years thanks to organizations focused on keeping the history alive. One such group is the City of Elk City, Oklahoma where the National Route 66 Museum resides.

The National Route 66 Museum is a must see for everyone because it covers Route 66 but also the evolution of transportation as a who throughout time. The cost of the visit is only $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for children so it’s sure to fit into any budget.

After you enter and pay you will walk to the left into an area displaying several transportation related items including Harley Davidson motorcycles, a 1948 Indian Chief and a REO fire engine. The kids will love taking the opportunity to sit in a pink Cadillac and slide down a fire pole!

After you finish this area you can opt in for a viewing of a 15 minute video covering the evolution of transportation and the migration West on Route 66. This is an optional video but I highly encourage you to take the time an watch!

Following the video you will continue on to the next building and take in all that is the Mother Road! This building has several displays of cars and tells about various stops along Route 66. The journey takes you through each state and gives information on times such as the dust bowl which spurred the great migration.

After you finish this building you can wander the grounds and view several other buildings to learn about life in the mid-1900s. You can also check out the Elk City museum, rodeo museum an a real train caboose!!

This museum is SO packed full of things to do for all ages and the price is definitely right. Elk City isn’t too far West of Oklahoma City so it’s an easy place to plan a stop. What makes the area even better is that the Elk City Lake City Park has a campground that’s usually not full for just $15.00 a night!
